Brief Description::

State Historical Society of Missouri Art Curator Joan Stack will discuss the SHSMO’s current exhibition The Missouri Sharecroppers’ Strike Black Resistance in the Depression Era in Ellis Library’s colonnade cases. The exhibition consists primarily of photographs documenting the Sharecroppers’ strike of 1939 that took place along the highways of Southeast Missouri. The photos were made on-site by famed St. Louis Post-Dispatch photojournalist, Arthur Whitman. The exhibit also includes Whitman’s photos of Cropperville, a Southeast Missouri farming community that grew out of the strike in which the sharecroppers owned their land communally.
